Coach and Horses
We came across this Village Pub/Restaurant during the early days of May of this year (2008), just stopping by for a quick drink and ending up staying for lunch, later returning the following day for a midweek evening meal. The Coach and Horses is located in the village of Thurgaton on the A612 Nottingham Road see map.
This is a lovely setting for lunch, or a mid week evening meal. The Sunday menu is listed as Sunday food and is served until 09.00pm add to this Saturday and you have the perfect venue for, dare I say a level of perfection normally associated with much more expensive restaurants.
Thurgaton is a sleepy residential village, lying at the foot of two hills with a stream
Running right through its centre on its way to the Trent. Its historic priory dates to the
days of the Norman Conquest, but only the exterior has stayed unchanged. The Coach and Horses was formerly called “the Wagon and Horses” but changed its name in recent years to avoid confusion with the similarly named pub in nearby Bleasby. Several rooms have been knocked into a single L-shaped one with three distinct areas. The shorter leg, with polished wooden tables and settees and chairs is used for dining plus a wood burning stove.
The menu is unashamedly simplistic in style either bar or restaurant, with little attempt to bring in any of the wilder elements of unusual flavours that afflicts a lot of dining rooms today. The wine list is relatively extensive, with a range of wines to suit most pallets and wallets.
A unique mix of antique and retro makes this a stunning place to enjoy a Room dining Experience. Previously the tables had been laid with linen clothes and napkins. Today though, the tables have been refurbished and re-polished and uses a minimalist approach to table settings. Cutlery has always been clean and the glasses spotless.
There is a secluded alcove that accommodates eight people and is ideal for private family dinning.
Have revisited on many occasions now, without being disappointed at the unvarying
quality in service and food. Try it mid week, quieter with the same food quality and service, even if you do not eat there it is an excellent hostelry. December 2008.
