I started being taught by Matt at the Guitar academy in Newark about 2 months ago. I've been to mainly group lessons and had a few private lessons and found the tuition great. I was somewhat of a beginner when i first went to lessons. I started having a few private lessons which were great he gave me a checklist of stuff to do, answered all the question i had, and helped me to become more confident and competent. I then went to the group lessons which were so much fun. I've never played with other musicians before and after a few group lessons matt showed me how to be creative and improvise and really interact with the other musicians. I started a beginner but have come so far already in just a few months my theory and playing have passed the beginner segment of the academy within the first 5 lessons and am looking at doing music grade 4 already. I found the case studies the most fun i'm a big fan of hard rock and blues stuff and matt allowed me to learn anything i wanted we did a bit of SRV, Hendrix and even did some Satriani stuff. Before i came to the guitar academy i was being taught things i didn't want to learn like how to read music, and i really didn't want to learn nursery ryhms. Matt doesn't teach nursery ryhms but he does do sight reading however he asked me when i started exactly what i wanted to do with my playing i said i didn't want to do sight reading so he hasn't shown me it. Instead i'm working on my musical ear and my technique. I really enjoyed the academy because it was cheap and i've developed quickly. I got given CD'S With backing tracks on for me to practice my improvisation and i also got alot of help with modes which i understand now, i'm just starting to use them in my improvisation. I would rate the academy it's great fun, there's never been any pressure on stuff i didn't want to learn and i've developed quickly.
