We have lived in the village for many years and have seen many changes to the Plough, some good some not so. over the last few months the Plough has finally become the heart of the local community with the local cricket team and weekly quiz bringing back folks who havent used the pub in years. We visit on a regular basis and are always blown away with the food and service. Gregg and his staff make the Plough the village pub it deserves to be.
A lovely pub with good food and real ale. We took our 2 chidren one sunday afternoon without booking and they were extremely accomodating and friendly - service was faultless, food (3 roasts & 1 specials fish dish) was fantastic - wonderful portions for children, chocolate mousse to die for in lovely relaxed but stylish surroundings. Have returned since and will continue to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
We took our two children here mid journey North as we wanted a friendly pub rather than the generic Little Chef or motorway services. We were 'greeted' by the apparent owner/manager with, "No we don't do bar meals just roast", which is fine but the manner in which it was said could have been much more customer friendly. Perhaps we should have cut our losses and left then but we 'ploughed on' by asking if we could sit in the garden, which looked quite inviting. We were sternly told, "No, it's the bar or the restaurant only", so we sat in the restaurant, having decided it was more important to eat than quibble over where we sat. Menus were produced and food was ordered, so far so good. The waitress was inexperienced but she really was sweet and did her very best. When our drinks and cutlery arrived, my drink had a lot of ice in it, which I had not wanted but was not asked about (not the end of the world). My daughter had a spoon with a 'mouth mark' on it which was very offputting. We asked the manager to change it and he did so although, it seemed, a bit grudgingly. When the meals arrived our youngest was given, with no warning, a plate so hot it could have actually burned her which was a bit worrying but the beef that she and I had chosen came out rather pink and cut in a slab rather than sliced. This may well be to many peoples' taste but was surely not for a young child. Really feeling the strain by now, we had to ask for the beef to be taken back and cooked some more. So our eldest and her dad carried on with their food until the beef came back which was between 5 and 10 minutes. The beef returned much better cooked, one with and one without a yorkshire pudding. When I asked the (gentle)man if my daughter could also have a yorkshire pudding, he asked me if it was beef or pork she was eating, despite the fact that he was standing next to us and had served us the beef in the first place! The yorkshire pud was produced with no style and we almost did not dare to ask for apple sauce for my husband's pork. The 'roast potatoes' were quite the oddest we have ever tasted; it was quite obvious that they had either been shallow or deep fat fried and the larger 2 were not even cooked in the middle and so were completely inedible. The pork was delicious although also produced as a slab and not with the advertised crackling but the beef was tough and not really tasty at all. We then had the temerity to ask for some more gravy, which arrived, piping hot in a nice gravy boat but the gravy granules had not all disolved when it arrived! When our waitress, Rachel, asked if everything was ok, we said, "No, not really" and, as politely as possible mentioned the potatoes and the general lack of quality of our food. She immediately apologised and removed our dirty dishes (complete with a fair bit of uneaten food). However, the final straw was to hear the 'manager' asking her what we had been moaning about..............Rachel returned with our bill. There was no deduction for the problems and no visit or comment from the manager at all. I guess he was only too happy to let his junior staff member take any heat that may have been coming. Against our better judgement, we paid the bill as being 'British' one does not like to offend but we REALLY wish we had gone to the services on the motorway or the Little Chef instead!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
