Look after your immunity this winter

The best way to fight disease is to make sure that we do not catch it. This means relying on our immune system to be strong and able to repel infective micro-organisms. There are several nutrients that have been shown to be beneficial in supporting the immune system.Some nutrients more usually found in our diet offer excellent immune enhancing properties, for example elderberry is immune supportive and anti-microbial protecting the body especially against influenza type viruses. Also Garlic has long been valued in traditional medicine for its antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal action. It is important that the garlic used has a high allicin yield for maximum benefit.More recently beta-glucans have proved invaluable in supporting immunity. These are found naturally in the bran of cereal grains and certain mushrooms. Without being too scientific, they support the body's first line of defence - a scientifically proven biological defence modifier and can naturally activate key components of the body's immune system.In addition to the above zinc is vital for good immune system function. Even small deficiencies in zinc can result in immune system impairment and it is well known that a vast proportion of the UK population are zinc deficient.
