  • 1 Unless you want to pay a fortune for lots of potatoes don't bother going here!

I wish we had read some of the reviews before traveling 3 hours and booking a hotel especially to go here! We had been passing by and ha a lunch time drink here some time ago, it looks fantastic and we swore that we would return for a meal. It was our anniversary so I thought we would have a treat, book a hotel and travel the 3 hours to the Mussel & Crab. The set up and concept of this restaurant are fantastic, the problem is the execution. My started was good - a potted duo - but my husbands so called king scallops were very disappointing as another reviewer has pointed out. When we ordered our main course - lobster thermadore for my husband and monkfish on mash for myself - I was surprised to be asked if I wanted chips or new potatoes - mine supposedly came with mash, why would I want yet more potatoes! I asked if I could have a salad instead and was told I would have to pay £2.95 for it! My husband decided he wouldn't mind some chips and some new potatoes so we ordered one of each. Neither the monkfish nor the lobster were at all impressive and with mash, chips and new potatoes it felt like the whole meal was just a plate of spuds!! With no dessert and a bill of almost £90 I mentioned my disappointment as we left just to be told "that's the way we do it". I don't care if that's the way they do it, they should listen to some feedback - potatoes and more potatoes just doesn't go! My husband came out of this restaurant starving, and he's not a big eater. We will not be returning!

  • 2 Arrogance

I have visited three times. On the first occasion when I asked for bread rather than chips with my main course mussels, the young waitress said I could, but it would be charged as a side order! Second visit everything fine. Third visit I made the same request for bread instead of chips with my mussels. This time our orders were being taken by a gentleman who I assumed was the proprietor. Again he said it would be provided as a side order not a substitute, I quote "We don't do swaps, people are always asking us to swap things ---- the beef for the lamb-----if we did that we should get ourselves in a right mess" Side order of bread £1.25, chips £1.75 according to that they could have saved 50p by doing the swap!!!! The bill included two drinks we had not ordered or received. The same gentleman's response was to declare he had served us with them himself, on being assured he had not his response was one of amusement, no hint of apology. Would I visit again? Guess!!!!!!!!

  • 4 Mussel & Crab, a real find!!!

After looking on the net for a good seafood restaurant, I came across The M&C. Menu looked great; a few iffy reviews, but I decided to give it a go nevertheless. What a marvellous experience. I went super early, lunchtime and was immediately enchanted at the look of the place; at least four different areas, featuring a french style cafe; a more formal setting; an italianate type trattoria and a relaxed, traditional type pub. The food was outstanding, from the magnificent baked garlic (the whole head was served and was scooped out of each clove like clotted cream) and heavenly home cooked bread on which to spread the garlic, to the completely wonderful seabass, fabulously cooked, Rick Stein would have been proud. It was truly a memorable experience and one I'm keen to repeat soon!!

  • 1 Poor service

We have visited the Mussel & Crab on a number of occasions and have been fully satisfied with the quality of food offered but the service has been appalling. We booked for New Years Eve 2005, arrived early and waited to have our order taken. However, after over an hour we realised that customers with later bookings were being served before us and when we were finally served, we made a verbal complaint to the waiter but only a very brief apology was offered. We chose to take this as a one-off but when we returned some months later for our anniversary the same thing happened again. The head waiter apologised and offered us a 'meal on him' but by this time we were so annoyed we did not want to stay. For the prices they charge you expect a high standard of service but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone and we certainly won't be using it again.

  • 4 Wonderful!

I found this review page whilst searching for their homepage and was very suprised to hear poor reviews. I visited the mussel and crab for my birthday celebrations and was treated like a king. The food was beautiful and the service impeccable. I would recommend it to anyone.

  • 1 Diappointed

Rude and abrupt waiter. Had to wait 45 minutes between starter and main course. By the time it was brought to the table it was dry and tasteless. We were then overcharged. Will not be visiting again.
